Mulan presents a repressed person fighting expectations that don’t match their own sense of self. Her continued efforts to meet the expectations placed on her by family bring her immense suffering, so by expressing her masculinity, subverting customs and blurring the boundaries of gender in their life and society. This New she creates is proved through hardship and effort to be essential, and celebrated, and loved.
